Ion
Exchange Articles
Essentials
of Ion Exchange; Natural water supplies contain dissolved salts, which
dissociate in water to form charged particles called ions. These ions are
usually present in relatively low concentrations and permit the water to
conduct electricity. They are sometimes referred to as electrolytes. These
ionic impurities can lead to problems in cooling and heating systems,
steam generation, and manufacturing. The common ions that are encountered
in most waters include the positively charged cations; calcium and
magnesium (hardness forming cations, which make a water "hard")
and sodium. The negatively charged anions include alkalinity, sulfate,
chloride, and silica. Ion exchange resins are particularly well suited for
the removal of these ionic impurities... .
Removing
Organics with Ion Exchange Resin; Organic materials can cause unwanted
tastes, colors or odors in potable water supplies, and can stain clothes
washed in water containing these compounds. Chemically these substances
are iodized by chlorine or ozone, after which the water is passed through
granular activated carbon. However, chlorine or ozone systems may not be
the most convenient choice for small home units... .
Common
Pitfalls of Ion Exchange for Organic Traps; Organic traps are used
primarily in two applications—color removal from drinking water and as
protection for demineralizers to reduce fouling. The following article is
not so much a "how to" piece on how to design such traps but
rather a discussion of common problems and how to avoid them, with respect
primarily to color removal. Fouling with organics is a separate issue not
discussed here. |
Ozone Articles
Air Treatment With Ozone;
Much has been said about the sick building syndrome and this
usually refers to institutional buildings. But they have basically the same problems as
the private home. People exposed to such conditions suffer from symptoms of environmental
toxicity.

Ozone Gets OK For Use In US Food Industry;
Ozone, one of the most effective disinfectants used in food processing in other countries,
has received "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) status in the United States
from a panel of experts in the food science, ozone technology, and other related fields.

food processing, and industrial toxic waste. |
Reverse
Osmosis Articles
Reverse Osmosis Theory;
Reverse Osmosis is a process in which a semipermeable membrane is used to
separate fluids of various qualities into a highly saturated concentrate
(brine) and a high quality permeated fluid low in dissolved solids. The
separation is accomplished by passing the fluid across the membrane at a
specified pressure and velocity. |
Technical
Articles
Chemical
Oxygen Demand (COD); Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a definitive
indicator of required treatment in wastewater, and estimating BOD is an
important part of wastewater treatment process control. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) requires wastewater treatment
plants to bring BOD within limits before discharging treated wastewater,
and accurate test results must be recorded for regulatory reporting. Thus,
measuring BOD in treated water is an important part of the monitoring
process. Many wastewater treatment facilities use a faster Chemical Oxygen
Demand (COD) test to estimate BOD levels... .
General pH Theory; pH is a
unit of measure which describes the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a
solution. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. The term pH is derived
from “p”, the mathematical symbol of the negative logarithm, and
“H”, the chemical symbol of Hydrogen.
General Conductivity
Theory; Conductivity is defined as the ability of a substance to
conduct electric current, which is the reciprocal of resistivity. All
substances posses conductivity to some degree, but the amount varies
widely, ranging from extremely low (insulators such as glass or benzene)
to very high (silver, copper, and metals in general).
